MAXmin Outcomes: Alumni Competition

We are estatic to announce the winners of the first-ever MAX_minimum Alumni Design Competition!

From Professor Scott Wall, Director, the School of Architecture:

The inaugural MAX_minimum Design Competition for students of the College has been completed, juried, and medalists selected!!!  And I am confident in saying it was a distinct success built on the combined efforts of students, faculty, staff and alumni.  The experience was extraordinary for all of us who participated, with teams of all of the Architecture and Interior Design students participating in the Competition at the beginning of the academic year, and alumni participating through early January of this year.  Both versions of the project provided an amazing cross-section of architectural ideas and form, and was equally rich in the spatial and technical exploration of those ideas.  Each event, though separated in time, celebrated the quality of applied design thinking that is a hallmark of Tennessee's College of Architecture + Design.

This is but the first of many future MAX_minimum Competitions highlighting the work of all of our students, and former students in Interior Design, Architecture and Landscape Architecture.  The competition allows each of us to challenge ourselves to continue to question the complex issues of the past, present and future through the act and art of design.

The future is yours to make.  As alumni of the programs here at the College I encourage each of you to look forward to next year's challenge, as we continue to find ways to make our College better, and, in turn, to honor one of our most revered instructors — Max Robinson.

The 2010 Max Robinson Bronze Medal of Excellence

is awarded to Curtis Lesh (B.Arch 2000) of Tuck-Hinton Architects:

Title: FORM | GRAPHIC, SPACE | LIGHT, TIME | USE, MATERIAL | FABRICATION

Select Jury Notes:

After much deliberation, the jury concluded this was the strongest entry to the alumni competition:

  • The design of the board is graphically compelling from a distance, and successfully drew the jury closer to learn more.
  • The jury admired the wrap and weave condition of the main entry signage element.  This move creates a clear sign and icon for the Downtown Studio, it energizes the display area, and it creates a threshold zone connecting the urban and interior conditions.
  • The jury appreciated the sequence of plan diagrams conveying an understanding that use of the space will vary with time, day, and user.
  • The spatial layout proposed by this parti is clear, flexible, and generally seems like it would work well.  This scheme seems to successfully consider the importance of designing in section, reflected in the entry element and in the materiality of the support bar.

The secondary mention, the Max Robinson Letter of Excellence

is awarded to Barry Alan Yoakum, FAIA (B.Arch 1978) and Andrew Parks (M.Arch 2004) of archimania:

Title: URBAN FISHBOWL

Select Jury Notes:

The jury admired the elegance of this submission, and was especially intrigued by the level of thinking about how design might engage the public realm.  This entry will be honored with the Letter of Excellence.

The jury appreciated how this scheme reshaped the entry sequence for the space.  In creating a major entry to the south, this scheme sets up a clear and functional entry threshold.  It also creates an intriguing exterior pocket on Gay Street where the public can engage work on display in the Urban Fishbowl, as well as students exhibited in the studio space.  This scheme, perhaps more than any other submitted, took great liberty in rethinking and reshaping the existing façade of the building, recognizing that the existing display cases and entry are problematic and unsatisfying.
